dvr-ms files won't play

Dear Ray in blu

Today I installed your software on my sony BDP-360 blu ray player and I was quite happy to find out the navigation and especially the feature to cache data is much more workable then my previous setup being the PMS server build 410 in combination with my Sony Bravia LCD TV. My compliments.

Unfortunately I found out that dvr-ms files will not play because either the file format is not recognised or it stops playing after 3 seconds or so with no sound. I suspect that the PMS server is not transcoding correctly since I had the same problem with the PMS build 389 and up. Finally I could solve this problem using the solution given in http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=6723 together with build 410.

I tried to implement the same solution with the PMS Server Renr, however no luck so far.
pls. help me to solve, since I record a lot of tvshows in dvr-ms format.

Peter

Too bad

How do I configure PMSMS to convert ahead to VOB ?

Grtz
Peter

I reinstalled my previous setup being the PMS server build 410 in combination with my Sony Bravia LCD TV.
With the same version of fffmpeg-MPGMUX each dvr-ms file is played and no sync problems are noticed. Also loading is much faster.

Can you explain why PMS rendr in combi with your media player does not work?

Would it be an option to adapt the media player and use PMS server 1.20 in combination?

Grtz
Peter

Peter,

The issue with DVR-MS format is that FFMpeg doesn't support it properly. The FFMpeg_MPGMUX that supports it is very old and has problems with everything else.

We will make another attempt at it in the next 2-3 weeks. Another option may be to have PS3MS convert these files ahead of time to VOB automatically. But it will double the storage space.

These USB sticks are more than fast enough for the DVR-MS file in question.

Dear Peter,
Unfortunately, we have not been able to reproduce these problems.

Dear Ray,

Very strange
Could it be that
- my blue-ray disk player (Sony BDP S360) is not compatable with PMS rendr ? or
- the USB stick (Sandisk Cruzer Micro 4GB) is too slow?

Grtz
Peter

Dear Peter,
We have been regularly testing with BDP S360 (US version). We don't think it is the player issue. If it is not too difficult, could you simply try a different USB?

Dear Peter,

Our testing results are
1. The clip has bit rate similar to HD video although it is SD video quality.
2. We were able to create pauses during play but only through a slow network connection. Pauses displaying rotating wait icon is the expected behavior when the next part of the video is not available in time.
3. With a fast network connection, the clip plays without problems.
4. We could not test fast forward 5 minutes because the clip is only 2 min long.
5. We will do additional testing for reliability of playing many clips one after another.

Could you check your network speed reported on PMS under Rendr icon?

Dear Peter,

It would seem that our set of DVR-MS test files is incomplete. It includes two types of DVR-MS files.
1. SD (720x480 and 720x576) with MP2 audio
2. HD (1280x720) with AC3 audio

None of these showed the a/v sync problem with 1.22.00.

Rendr Edition of the PS3 Media Server uses the exact same executable library (ffmpeg_MPGMUX) to extract the DVR-MS streams as the standard version. The remaining settings should not affect AV sync at least in theory.

We would like to get a video sample from you (about 5 min, preferable English) that demonstrates sync and possibly other problems so that we can test and fix this issue completely. You can use a public file share service or docs.google.com and share with rayinblu@rayinblu.com.

We appreciate your help in resolving this problem.

Tried Rendr update version 1.22.00

Except that some (but not all) dvr-ms files are A/V synchronised, I do not experience any improvement with the previous version, being:
1. Load times are very long (50 seconds or more depending on file size); I keep getting the message "waiting for data from server"
2. The system is unstable: when I manage to play a dvr-ms file, the next file most of the time will not start.
3. Fast forward 5 minutes takes ages to complete
4. Video stutters. Cannot be a problem with my USB stick since test files play perfectly well.

I really am getting tired of spending so much time on a product which still is not finished. As mentioned before the original PMS server performs great on dvr-ms files (play within 3 seconds) and fast forwarding. I cannot understand why then the PMS rendr edition has so much trouble to perform the some task.

Pls help, because I am seriously considering to request a refund

Grtz
Peter

Dear Rayinblu,

I did not express myself correctly: the A/V synchronisation problem hardly occurs anymore. To me that is a minor problem.

The major problems I am still experiening have to do with the load time, stability and stuttering (see point 1-4 in my previous reaction)

A representative sample file with which I experience these problems can be downloaded at http://www.mediafire.com/?r2bbmsrk5jhe4qp
This is by the way the same file as sent before (see above).

For yr convenience I also have included a debug file : http://www.mediafire.com/?2g7eui35cdm39

Grtz Peter

Dear Ray,

1. Correct. The file was recorded with DVB-C (Digital TV)
2. I do not see the rotating icon, but especially with large files the framerate seems to decline

additional remarks
6. This particular video shows unsynchronised A/V
7. Load time (time betweeen clicking the video icon and start displaying) is more than 40. sec.
With bigger files it gets more and the message " waiting for data from server " is displayed

I could not measure network speed, because it is not depicted below the Rendr icon.
however using my Sony Bravia TV with PMS Rendr I get network speeds well over 30 MB/s

Peter

Dear Ray,

Tried 3 different USB sticks and measured speed with http://usbspeed.nirsoft.net/publish_usb_flash_drive_speed.html

The stick I have been using all the time (Sandisk microcruzer 4GB) has the following values
- write speed 7,39 MB/s
- read speed 26,7 MB/s

What are the exact requirements from yr site,

grtz
Peter

Peter,
Try the version 1.21.03 to see if it works for you. The support for DVR-MS has a number of limitations as shown in http://www.rayinblu.com/forum/thread/released-ps3-media-server-rendr-edi... .

Hai,

In general most dvr-ms files play well, however for all files audio and video are not in sync. Audio is about 0.2 sec ahead of video. I tried different configuration of MEncoder and TMuxer, but unfortunately no improvement.

Then, mysteriously some (20%) dvr-ms files do not play at all. In contrary to the files which do play, the media player gives messages that the dvd-ms server does not work. Strange thing these files do not play because they have been recorded in the same way as the files which do play. I tried to find a pattern but it seems that the size of the file, the subfolder, whether it has been analysed do not matter.

I finally noticed that the loading of the file takes quite some time (1 to 2 minutes), I am using a 4GB SanDisk Microcruzer as external memory for my Sony blu-ray player. Can this be the cause?

Grtz,
Peter

Peter,
We have identified the problem and working on a fix for it. We should be able to release the updated version of PS3MS within a couple of weeks.

You are right that we haven't tested with dvr-ms files. Could you provide a sample file so that we can test its functionality? You could use mediafire or another file sharing site for the sample. We prefer smaller files compared to larger ones.

Peter,

1. The delay is likely caused by the m2ts container creation process since Blu-ray requires m2ts to play. We don't yet know why it happens and we will attempt to fix it in the next release in about 2-3 weeks.
2. The startup delays also are by how Blu-ray handles the video content.

We are working on a major release of PS3 Media Server - Rendr Edition that will allow access to Hulu online videos. We would release the fixes to DVR-MS support at that time as well.

What is the status of the new release?
Grtz, Peter

Still no reaction....
What is cooking?
Grtz Peter

Dear Peter,
We have been trying to stabilize the upcoming release. It should be out in about a week.

Hai

I saved a 2 minute dvr-ms file as http://www.mediafire.com/?r2bbmsrk5jhe4qp

Other observations
- My dvd files (.vob) extensions play perfectly well. The folder in which they are present g:\dvd can be accessed correctly from the media player
- The folder containing the dvr-ms files (G:\recordedtv) can often not be accessed from the media player. It seems that when executing the pms-rendr as "administrator" on the computer that chanches are better.
- Once I managed to actually play a dvd-md. However no sound
- the debug log tells "C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32\ffmpeg.exe has a return code of 1! Maybe an error occured"
- often I get a message on my computer that fffmpeg-MPGMUX.exe has stopped
- I enclosed a debug file as http://www.mediafire.com/?y14tlgs2itfl2e2

Peter

Thanks, we will work with them as soon as we can.
