Getting Started

Ray in Blu Rendr Digital Media Receiver Getting Started
  1. Configure Blu-Ray Player for BD Live
  2. Install Media Server on One or More Computers.
  3. Insert Disc and Operate with Blu-ray Player's Remote Control.

1. Configure Blu-Ray Player for BD Live

Requires BD Live capable player. Make sure your player carries BD-Live logo.

1.1 Connect player to network

Connect the player to your home network using either a wired or wireless connection. All players allow wireless connections - some have built in (albeit slower type G) while others need an external device which costs about $50. Please consult your player's user manual. A guide on choosing an external device for wireless connection is located at Connecting Blu-ray Player to Network.

Network connection speed is critical for playing HD movies. For best playback performance, we suggest a wired or wireless-N type network connection.

1.2 Install memory (if not already present)

BD Live requires 1GB or more memory. If your player doesn't have built-in memory, then you must install an external memory. Players need either a USB or a SD card type memory which can be plugged into the slot provided either in front or on back of the player.

Memory speed is critical for playing HD movies. For best playback performance, make sure the memory you install is a newer memory 4GB or larger. Such memories cost about $10.

1.3 Allow player to update firmware (if prompted)

Firmware updates corrects known issues and installs needed enhancements. It will improve operation of your player.

1.4 Allow All (Always) BD Live Internet Connection

Browse through player's setup menus and find the setting that relates to BD Live Internet connection permission. Make sure it set to Allow All or Always depending upon your player.

2. Install Media Server on One or More Computers

Computers must run PS3 Media Server – Rendr Edition software in order to communicate with Rendr. It is a UPNP/DLNA server software derived from very popular PS3 Media Server. It is free and open source. Note that the standard version of PS3 Media Server will NOT work with Rendr.

For best HD movie playback performance, a server computer needs to be fast and have a fast network connection. We recommend a wired or wireless-N type network connection for the server computer.

  1. Install Java from here if not already installed.
  2. Download appropriate version of PS3 Media Server - Rendr Edition (free) for your computer
